My favourite goal. Story from Tom Scholes:
Paris Saint-Germain’s chase for the Champions League has gifted football some incredible and memorable moments. Barcelona’s Remontada, their capitulation at home to Manchester United in 2019 that essentially gift wrapped the manager’s job to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (the rest of football can thank the Parisians for that one), but when thinking of big moments that happened in favour of PSG, my mind immediately went back to one night in London when two newer super clubs met in the Round of 16, both vying for a place in the quarter finals. Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes and the Blues seemed to hold the advantage in the tie with their away goal, but the second leg at Stamford Bridge was an incredibly tense affair. Gary Cahill put Chelsea ahead after 81 minutes before David Luiz levelled for PSG, sending the game into extra time. Eden Hazard dispatched a penalty in the early stages of extra time, but with only a handful of minutes left on the clock, Thiago Silva etched his name into Parisian history. He rose highest to meet Thiago Motta’s corner and sent the away end into meltdown.
L’Equipe the following day had Thiago Silva’s celebration on it’s front cover with the headline Heroiques and that’s exactly what it was. The captain came up when it mattered most and besides, it’s always good to get one over Chelsea…
