Heartbreak, disconnect and misery. These are the words that defined England at tournaments in my lifetime. The World Cup in Russia had been a revelation, but the sharks still circled the team. They hadn’t beaten a big fish, they were yet to show they were the real article. Until Euro 2020. England cruised past a kind group, and finally got their opportunity to prove their ability against a household name. Germany at Wembley. There is no bigger fixture. No bigger test. No victory against them in knockout football since 1966. Gareth Southgate set us up: Maguire at the back, Kane in attack. It had been a quiet opening exchange, befitting the nerves of the occasion. Then Sterling sent the nation into raptures. And I was there to experience it.
