Moving on to international football now… People often ask what was the best match you’ve seen? I always say the night in Munich when England beat Germany 5-1. Sven Goran Eriksson had recently taken over and we went to Munich in a World Cup Qualifier to play our greatest rivals. We won 5-1 and Michael Owen scored a Hat-Trick! When he scored the third goal, and I have this almost imprinted on my forehead, I commentated “This is getting better and better and better”. That stuck in my mind and in fact Sven Goran Eriksson reminded me of that quote the next time I saw him. In those days, not only did we not normally beat Germany very often but we never beat them 5-1. And all the goals in that game were scored by Liverpool players.
