Karel Poborsky v Portugal 1996

Being a home tournament and England's agonisingly close call in the Semi Finals aside, Euro 96 was great because it is where a number of players that I had never heard of, suddenly and spectacularly shot their way into my consciousness.
And whilst the likes of Slaven Bilic, Pavel Nedved, Davor Suker and Patrick Berger all stood out - Karel Proborsky was the jewel that Euro 96 unearthed for me. His goal against Portugal was the defining moment of his tournament (and perhaps his career). He received the ball on the periphery of the final third of the pitch, put his head down and ran at the heart of the Portugese defence like a steam train. Bulldozing his way through four defenders to the edge of the box, without looking up, he then scooped the ball over the onrushing Victor Baia. For a moment it looked to be too high, but then it dropped like an anvil out of the sky and into the net. Was it a chip, was it a lob? Who cares, it was a great goal, and one that launched Proborsky’s career into a new stratosphere.
