Chosen by Emmanuel Ayamga as his favourite ever goal.

My favourite ever goal has to be Asamoah Gyan’s for Ghana against the USA at the 2010 World Cup. Not just for the fact that I’m Ghanaian and that the goal was one of the most important in my country’s history, but for the sheer technique and resilience that Gyan summoned to make the net bulge. When Andre Ayew hoofed the ball from his own half three minutes after extra time had started, it wasn’t meant to be a pass. It was a clearance following a sustained spell of pressure from the Americans. However, Gyan gave the ball a chase even though he stood little chance of getting to it first. Never mind that the odds were stacked against the striker when he found himself in a two-on-one situation against Carlos Bocanegra and Jay DeMerit; he relished the battle, took them on and shrugged off their body checks, before volleying the ball into the net with his weaker left foot. It is a goal worthy of winning any game and it was only fair that that strike powered Ghana into the quarter-finals of the World Cup. I don’t think I’ll ever see a better goal.
