Chosen by Andrew Beasley as their favourite ever goal:
A European night at Anfield is a special thing, even when it’s only a Champions League qualifier and not the real deal. In August 2017, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds needed to beat Hoffenheim to reach Europe’s top table for the first time on his watch and they did so in emphatic style. Their third goal, scored in just the 21st minute of an eventual 4-2 win, was so good that Klopp turned to the Main Stand and bellowed ‘THIS IS FOOTBALL.’ He wasn’t wrong. Like so many of the best goals his side score, the move went from back to front in seconds. A long ball from Gini Wijnaldum found Sadio Mané on the left wing. He dribbled into the box, backheeled a pass to Roberto Firmino who then crossed to the far post to set up a tap-in for… Emre Can? Emre Can. It might have been Mo Salah’s first start at Anfield, and he did get a goal, but he wasn’t the scorer for this one. But the Reds’ front three as we now know and love them were already beginning to come together and it was a privilege to be at the first home match which started Liverpool’s journey to the Champions League final in Kiev. But we don’t talk about that. Let’s talk about this goal instead. It is football.
