My favourite Women's FA Cup Goal: Words from Chris Slegg

Ji So-yun’s winner for Chelsea against Notts County in 2015 may not have been the most aesthetically pleasing goal ever scored but it was notable for several reasons.

The South Korea international’s close-range finish eight minutes before the break was the first ever Women’s FA Cup final goal scored at Wembley, with the showpiece event of the women’s season having never previously been played at the national stadium. It also happened to be the 150th Women’s FA Cup final goal of all time.

Ji was alert in the box to capitalise on fine work by England international Eniola Aluko. Player of the Match Aluko cut in from the left, strode into the box and neatly slid the ball to her team-mate. As Ji took a touch a host of defensive bodies scrambled to clear the danger but could only succeed in playing the ball back into her path to poke home.

The goal proved enough to win the game, a triumph which secured Chelsea Women the first trophy in their history. It was a breakthrough moment for Emma Hayes who has since gone on to become the WSL’s most successful manager.

A crowd of just over 30,710 (a record for the competition at the time) was pitch side at Wembley to witness Ji’s goal and a Chelsea victory which saw Katie Chapman become the first captain to lift the prestigious trophy beneath the famous arch.
