Sometimes football provides moments you simply couldn’t script, and Didier Drogba’s Champions League winning-penalty was one of those. From his header scored from a corner in the 88th minute, there was a sense that Drogba could not allow this moment to pass. In the painful penalty shootout defeat to Manchester United four years prior, Drogba had hit the post and then been sent off. But that night in Munich was his. By the time he was making the long walk to the penalty spot from the halfway line, his teammates were picking themselves up off the floor having just watched Bastian Schweinsteiger hit his penalty against the post. Drogba had missed penalties before - notably in the Africa Cup of Nations - but he was the coolest man in the Allianz Arena as he slotted his penalty into the bottom corner with what many believed would be his last kick of a ball in a Chelsea shirt. Such was the narrative of that moment, as a 14-year-old it inspired me to write about football as a career. It went into my personal statement when applying for university, and a picture of Drogba’s strike hung on my bedroom wall throughout my degree.
