As someone who grew up supporting Arsenal in the 00s, the label of ‘glory hunter’ was something I had thrown at me quite a lot towards the beginning. That wasn’t true for a few reasons. The first was geographical. Arsenal was my local team and therefore the one I supported. The second and far more painful reason though was that I had missed all the good stuff. I had the faintest memories of the penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in 2005, but since then my days supporting the Gunners had been largely starved of success. I had seen us come close in the 2006 Champions League final, the 2007 League Cup final and most calamitously the 2011 Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham, but victory was not a taste I was familiar with. So when the 2014 FA Cup final against Hull came along I was wary of getting too over-excited. My pessimism seemed to be well found when after just eight minutes Arsenal found themselves two goals down. Maybe it was the adrenaline of the occasion or a delusional sense of hope, but a tiny part of me felt that wasn’t going to be the end of the story. I’ll be honest when Santi Cazorla scored his excellent free kick I never thought Arsenal weren’t going to win that game and so it came to pass with goals from Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey. I had always wondered what the feeling of watching your team go up the Wembley steps to lift a trophy was like having watched on enviously for nine years. That sunny day in May, I quickly realised it was the best sensation football had to offer.
