Michael Thomas: Arsenal v Liverpool 1989

Not often does a League season come down to the final game. Rarer still do the rivals meet in the final game. But that is exactly what happened in the 88/89 season with firm favourites for the title, Liverpool, coming up against second placed Arsenal in a straight shoot out. Arsenal needed a two goal win. Leading 1-0 and with barely a minute to play Arsenal desperately searched for the elusive second goal. Michael Thomas made a surging run from midfield and was put through on goal for a golden opportunity. The difference between him scoring and missing that chance was agony or ecstasy for both sets of fans. Of course he slotted home and claimed Arsenal's first title in 18 years.
